School of Medicine alumni are scattered across the state and throughout the country, representing numerous graduating classes and practicing a variety of specialties at an assortment of institutions. By March 2020, they, like their colleagues here at UMMC, were facing a common enemy, sharing similar emotions and hoping for the same thing: an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. ]]>

For Sandra Horne, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association Educator of the Year, the classroom is more than a place for teaching dental hygiene students how to clean a patient’s teeth or prevent and treat diseases of the gums. In the School of Dentistry, she imparts wisdom on how to take pride in their work and have genuine concern for the provision of optimum care. ]]>

A COVID-19-safe drive-through giving event is planned for April 29. ]]>
Just because the COVID-19 vaccine is free doesn't mean it's easy to get. Many of those served by the student-run Jackson Free Clinic can't access the Internet to make appointments to get the shot at state-run, drive-through operations. The clinic has stepped up, providing the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine to an ever-changing patient base. ]]>

When a rogue wisdom tooth sent Wilbert McGee to the dentist in 1979, all of his teeth ended up being removed. Nearly half of those students – 60 in all – matched right here at the Medical Center. ]]>
Everyone around medical student Conner Ball knew he was a gifted singer/musician – in fact, they seemed to know it better than he did. Then, as a kind of confidence-booster, his wife Carrie bought him a recording session at a local studio, and that was, more or less, the first step toward a coveted audition with one of America’s premier TV talent shows. ]]>
It truly was a race against the clock: When a team of plastic and oral/maxillofacial specialists at UMMC agreed to remove a large, aggressive tumor from the jaw of a Puerto Rican teen and then rebuild that bone, the surgeons had no time to waste. The fast-growing tumor, already the size of a softball, left the patient unable to open her mouth or eat. Today, she is cancer-free. ]]>
